After first ‘pioneering’ solar and wind projects such as in Morocco, Egypt and the UAE the broad energy transition has recently definitely shown a break-through in the entire region. The Desert Energy Leadership Summit, once a pioneer itself, has become THE leading event on the practical migration towards a fully emission free power supply in the regional and inter-regional context. ‘High level discussions’ about the emission free power markets of the future are important, but at the end what will determine success is the answer to ‘how do we get there’, step by step, safely and economically and with local benefits, taking proper account of the complex local environment. The Summit will, thus, focus on the experiences with concrete projects in the deserts, and the practical integration in the local and interconnected regional power grids and markets. A comprehensive power system approach adopting bankable RE and grid technologies and new elements, such as different types of storage and/or alternative transport media such as hydrogen or solar based desalination, will make the Summit an absolute ‘must’ for key professionals in the energy community and beyond.
This year’s Summit will bring together global visionaries, regional and international industry leaders and political forces all in one place to discuss and debate the perspectives and practical implementations of the southern Mediterranean and West Asian interconnected power systems in the transition toward full sustainability.
The Shuaa Energy I PV project is a 260 MW project developed by the market giant ACWA Power as a part of the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030. ACWA Power has been awarded 260MW Solar PV plant, at the lowest tariff of 5.84 US Cents/kWh over a 25-year period at a total cost of US$ 326 million using the thin film technology. This project demonstrates declining costs of Solar PV technology, making it more cost-competitive when compared to conventional energy such as natural gas. NOMAC operates and maintains the plant while the ownership is shared by ACWA Power (49%) and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (51 %). The plant is the second phase of the 1GW Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.
