The Hydrogen Council have launched, for the first time, their flagship Global Hydrogen Compass through a dedicated virtual event, bringing together Hydrogen Council Co-Chairs and member CEOs from across the world to discuss the findings and what they mean for the next phase of hydrogen deployment.
The Global Hydrogen Compass 2026 provides a clear, fact-based view of the state of the global hydrogen industry, combining comprehensive industry data with perspectives from around 70 global CEOs and lessons from mature hydrogen projects.
This year’s report shows continued progress across the sector, while also reflecting a broader shift in the global context: alongside decarbonisation, energy security, resilience and industrial growth are increasingly shaping hydrogen investment and policy decisions.
Here are some of the main findings:
- More than USD 130 billion in investment is now committed across more than 570 projects worldwide, corresponding to 6.9 million tonnes per year (Mtpa) of committed clean hydrogen capacity.
- Around 90% of committed projects are already under construction or operational, demonstrating continued progress from commitments towards delivery.
- Operational clean hydrogen capacity has almost doubled this year and is poised to double again next year as projects currently under construction come online.
- Around 6 Mtpa of potential clean hydrogen demand by 2030 is already supported by either confirmed offtake or fully enacted policies, including 4.2 Mtpa of binding offtake. Full implementation of existing policy commitments could unlock a further ~5 Mtpa, taking potential demand to around 11 Mtpa.
- China remains the largest market for committed hydrogen investment, at around USD 44.5 billion, and accounts for more than half of global committed renewable hydrogen capacity. Europe is now the second-largest market for committed investment, at around USD 30 billion, and continues to lead globally in project count.
- North America remains the global leader in low-carbon hydrogen, accounting for around 80% of committed low-carbon capacity globally.
