MENA Hydrogen Alliance

We aim to create the MENA hydrogen community with a regional focus and global scope to accelerate the deployment of low-carbon hydrogen

The Alliance serves as a platform for members to connect and collaborate on pathways for advancing hydrogen economies in the MENA region. It acts as the unified voice and convener of the region’s hydrogen sector, bringing together stakeholders from the private sector, public sector, and academia.

As part of its advocacy efforts, the Alliance also produces joint studies, strategic reports, and facilitates knowledge-sharing through working groups, workshops and roundtables, helping to foster innovation and collaboration across the sector.

Our team supported renowned organizations like the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) through peer reviews, further reinforcing our commitment to shaping policies and practices within the clean energy ecosystem.

Vision

To be a truly collaborative private-public platform with the MENA Hydrogen Alliance as convener. The Alliance aims to be the thought leader

Objectives

  • To kick-start local hydrogen economies to spur investments, stimulate innovation and create jobs and explore export revenue opportunities.
  • To guide policymakers and stakeholders with solid technical and economic information, such as on hydrogen technologies and business cases.
  • To accelerate investments in hydrogen technologies and powerfuels by stimulating international markets.
  • To foster international cooperation and building long-term partnerships to develop local and export markets for green molecules.
  • To connect industry captains to create practical conditions for business opportunities.
To join the Alliance, an organization must adhere to Dii Desert Energy’s Network as Partner, committing to the alliance's shared vision and contributing to its operational work.

Liquid Hydrogen Taskforce

The Liquid Hydrogen (LH2) taskforce was established in 2024 to define a strategy to advance liquid hydrogen as a purposeful hydrogen carrier.

To support the industry, the MENA Hydrogen Alliance has established a Liquid Hydrogen Task Force, focused on developing a strategy to promote liquid hydrogen as an effective and purposeful hydrogen carrier. This task force gathers data, creates a collaborative stakeholder platform, and provides thought leadership to drive alignment and progress among key stakeholders.

By: Dii Desert Energy: Chiara Aruffo, PhD and Cornelius Matthes

Date of Publication: February 2025

With the fast evolution the region is experiencing in the last years and targets set by countries, we want to provide a forward-looking picture on how the energy transition to 2030 could unfold. The work leverages the insights from the Renewable Projects database, the MENA H2 tracker and the newly added Energy Storage Projects database on one side, and the unique knowledge of the region that Dii Desert Energy has built over the years. Having most of the ‘doers of projects’ as partners, Dii has unique insights and is always close to the latest developments of projects and markets.

Date of Publication: November 2024

The study investigates current energy storage requirements and how they will evolve to meet future energy demand. It emphasizes the critical role of hydrogen in the energy transition, highlighting the need for additional hydrogen storage to support a clean and functional future energy system. Despite a projected decrease in overall storage, the study projects a significant rise in storage costs, with hydrogen playing a much more important role than most existing models predict.
