Ingeteam awarded a new 133 MW green hydrogen project for an oil refinery in Germany

  • The 133 MW electrolysis project is expected to produce up to 11,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually from 2025.
  • With this new contract, which joins other large-scale projects that Ingeteam has participated in, the company has surpassed half a gigawatt in the hydrogen sector.

Ingeteam has been awarded a major new project for the green hydrogen sector. Having supplied its technology for several projects exceeding 100 MW at different global locations, and successfully passing validation testing for using its equipment to energise electrolysers, the company has been selected to equip a decarbonisation project at an oil refinery in Germany, at BP's Lingen site in the northwest of the country, 25 km from the Dutch border.

This project confirms the Spanish technology company’s 2020 decision to apply its power electronics and control electronics technology to the hydrogen production industry.

In its role as a technology partner, Ingeteam will supply 20 units of its full skid solution equipped with 40 INGECON H2 E6000 rectifiers, responsible for energising the electrolysers that will produce up to 11,000 tonnes of green hydrogen a year. Initially, the electricity will be sourced from an offshore wind PPA (power purchase agreement) and its production will replace the consumption of grey hydrogen currently produced by carbon reforming, a very CO 2 -intensive process. Ingeteam’s rectifiers chosen for their high current density and their optimised design, to meet the demanding requirements of plants like this one. The scope of supply also includes equipment commissioning works.

Notably, in 2018 this refinery pioneered the world’s first test of renewable hydrogen at an oil refinery. It processes approximately 100,000 barrels of crude oil a day (about five million tonnes a year) and produces heating fuels and chemical feedstocks.

With this new contract, Ingeteam has reached the milestone of having exceeded half a gigawatt supplied or awarded, consolidated its technological alliance with the project’s electrolyser manufacturer and confirmed the industry's commitment to large-scale renewable hydrogen production, leading the sector.

In the words of Ingeteam's Green H2 business unit director, Harkaitz Ibaiondo, “We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to supply our technology for a project of this magnitude. It is undoubtedly an important reward for the effort and hard work put in by the entire team, which constitutes a success for us and positions us as a benchmark manufacturer for the industry”. Ingeteam has to date supplied its technology to energise electrolysers for projects in Belgium, Australia, Germany, Spain, the United States and Canada.
